Launch From the Lake. Float Above Tahoe.

Float above Lake Tahoe at sunrise, launching from the deck of the Tahoe Flyer in the world’s only hot air balloon launch from a boat.

For more than 30 years, we’ve had the privilege of sharing Lake Tahoe from a perspective few people ever experience. What began as an idea unlike anything else in ballooning has become one of Tahoe’s most unforgettable adventures. After thousands of flights, we still love every sunrise.

Not just a balloon ride. A Lake Tahoe experience.

We’re the only hot air balloon company in the world known to launch directly from a boat, creating a takeoff and perspective you simply can’t experience anywhere else. From sunrise over Lake Tahoe to the celebration afterward, every part of the morning is unlike any other balloon ride.

⚓ Boat launch
The world’s only known hot air balloon launch from a boat, right from the deck of the Tahoe Flyer.
⚠ Safety First
FAA Part 91 compliant, USCG inspected and approved, with every flight led by an FAA certified commercial balloon pilot with a minimum of 500 flight hours.
☀ Sierra Nevada views
Take in panoramic views of Emerald Bay, Fallen Leaf Lake, Cascade Lake, and Desolation Wilderness. On clear mornings, you may even see peaks in Yosemite more than 100 miles away.
🍾 Post-flight celebration
Land back aboard the Tahoe Flyer, then celebrate with a traditional champagne toast, mimosas, and snacks as you cruise back across Lake Tahoe.

Your morning begins before the world wakes up

There is nothing quite like arriving at the lake in the dark, the air still cold and the water glassy. As the Tahoe Flyer carries you out onto the open lake, the first light of dawn begins to glisten across the Sierra granite peaks and your balloon slowly takes shape on deck. This is more than a tour. It’s a memory you carry for the rest of your life.

Marina arrival · pre-dawn
STEP 01
Arrival & Board the Tahoe Flyer
You arrive in the predawn quiet, with the lake flat and dark and the mountains still hidden against the sky. As the stars begin to fade, your crew welcomes you with hot coffee, light refreshments, and a full safety briefing before you step aboard the Tahoe Flyer, our custom built balloon launch vessel. From there, you cruise across the open water toward the morning’s launch site as the first light begins to reach the Sierra.
STEP 02
Launch from the lake
Once the Tahoe Flyer reaches the morning’s launch site, the crew begins inflating the balloon right from the upper deck. You watch as the envelope slowly rises above the boat and takes shape against the brightening Sierra sky. Then it’s time to step into the basket. With a gentle lift, the deck falls away beneath you and Lake Tahoe opens up in every direction. No runway. No field. Just open water, mountain air, and the beginning of a flight unlike any other.
STEP 03
Sunrise over the Sierra
As you drift above Lake Tahoe, the rising sun begins to illuminate the water and surrounding Sierra. Depending on the winds, you may skim just above the treetops or soar several thousand feet above the lake, with views stretching toward Emerald Bay, Desolation Wilderness, and even Yosemite on the clearest mornings.
STEP 04
Return and champagne toast
Your pilot gently guides the balloon back toward the Tahoe Flyer as the boat comes into view below. Moments later, you touch down on the upper deck and the crew welcomes you back aboard. With the excitement of the landing still fresh, it’s time to celebrate with champagne, mimosas, and light snacks as you cruise back across Lake Tahoe.

“We had the best time with Lake Tahoe Balloons! Going in a hot air balloon had been on our bucket list, and doing it here did not disappoint! The crew is phenomenal - so personal, interactive, and customer service oriented. They really go above and beyond. It's amazing how talented they are to make this work. Sheldon was a fantastic pilot and guide for our flight, the crew took our phones at one point and took photos and video for us, and Greg did an amazing job of navigating the boat for a smooth landing. I can't emphasize enough how NOT scary this experience was! Highly recommend!”

“The uniqueness of launching and landing from the boat alone sets this operation apart, the scenery only adds on top of that, and the crew being entertaining and professional put the cherry on top.”

Common questions

Everything you need to know

How safe are hot air balloon rides?
Hot air ballooning is one of the safest forms of aviation. Our pilots hold FAA commercial certificates with 500+ flight hours each. We maintain a zero-incident safety record across 2,000+ flights, carry $2M in commercial liability insurance, and cancel any flight where weather conditions are marginal. Your safety always comes first.
What happens if the weather is bad?
We assess weather conditions at 4:00 AM on flight day using surface observations, upper-level wind data, and local forecasting models. If conditions don't meet our safety thresholds, we cancel and offer a full refund or free reschedule to any available date within 12 months.
How long does the whole experience take?
Allow approximately 4 hours for the complete experience. You'll meet the crew at Tahoe Keys Marina, cruise to the launch site aboard the Tahoe Flyer, enjoy approximately 1 hour of flight time, then celebrate with a champagne toast and cruise back across the lake.
What should I wear?
Dress in layers. Mornings at Lake Tahoe can be cool (40–50°F at launch), but temperatures warm quickly once the sun rises. Closed-toe shoes are required. We recommend long pants and bringing a light jacket you can tie around your waist once it warms up.
Can children fly?
Children ages 6 and up are welcome on shared flights. They must be tall enough to see over the basket rim (approximately 42 inches) and accompanied by a parent or guardian. Private charters can accommodate younger children on a case-by-case basis.
What's your cancellation policy?
Cancel more than 72 hours before your flight for a full refund. Within 72 hours, we offer a credit valid for 12 months. Weather cancellations by us always receive a full refund or free reschedule — no questions asked.
